Vintage and Retro 70’s Designed Architecture

Vintage and Retro 70's Designed Architecture

Our regular readers will know that we really enjoy vintage and retro design. From old record sleeves to cars, we love the look of something that appears to have travelled in time from the past. We recently got looking at vintage and retro architecture, particular from the 1970’s. There is something so memorable about 70’s inspired architecture, the hard edges and cold concrete mixed with chocolate and cream colours. No wonder so many modern buildings are starting to take inspiration from this era.

During some time spent trawling through blogs, websites and Flickr we found some excellent examples of vintage and retro architecture and thought we would share with you some of our favourites. Some are new builds and some are originals:

The final four images are copyright to Julius Shulman and are taken from his film ‘Visual Acoustics’  which documents his career in architectural photography. The film looks amazing and a trailer can be viewed here.

This is an awesome list. I especially like the yacht, or is it a house on the water?

  • Wow! Some possible James Bond villain lairs there, excellent collection. Love the glass cube in the woods one myself!

  • Nora Reed says:

Those are some very interesting architectural designs. Some look more modern than vintage, although I could see the 70’s inspiration behind each piece.

Hi Matthew – Not too sure if it’s movable, I think it’s more of a house on the water. I love the interiors of that one they are very modern – white, crisp and clean.

Hi Gareth – Very James Bond we were thinking that when collecting the images for this post!

Hi Nora – I think each building has a 70’s influence and each look very distinct and dramatic in their own way.

Thank you all for your thoughts!

  • Very interesting! I love architecture, I’m fascinated by it.

Isn’t the bottom one from the Charlies Angels movie? One one that Drew Barrymore falls out of when shot.

Hi Amanda, They are certainly interesting! Possibly not too sure?

    Thanks for your thoughts!

  • Tim says:

Some of these examples are actually fairly recent buildings and certainly not from the 70s. I did enjoy your post but you should check your list again just to make sure. It makes me wonder what we will think about today’s crazy buildings in 30 years.

  • Lu says:

    Hi Tim,

You are right a lot of these examples are contemporary, in the intro we’ve mentioned that some of these are originals and some new builds.

I know, I do wonder what we will look back at and think that’s soo retro cool that we take for granted now?

  • Porter Torma says:

Look! it is a magnificent creating and property pattern from Design (Cayman) Ltd. I’m attached to of architectural design like this, it seems extremely attractive! You must completely fully grasp what the architectural layout is. And it appears to be Architect making these styles are certified professionals, I don’t know what is the expense, lol! Even so, I want to have initiatives on the best way to develop simple models. I am aspiring to be a glowing architectural designer.
