Copyright in graphic design

We’ve all been there, there’s no need to paint you a detailed picture, client chooses to source their own images and their way of doing this is to punch in what they want into a Google images search, find an image, send you a link, you explain the image is copyrighted and cannot be used, client kicks up a fuss, you end up sourcing legitimate images.

Why I Think Twitter is Awesome!

Why I think Twitter is Awesome

OK, so I have a small confession to make. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Twitter when it launched, and that is an understatament to say the least, I actually thought that Twitter was a complete waste of time. In my eyes, the people using it were lonely individuals with way too much time on their hands, using it to tell other lonely people with too much time on their hands what they were having for lunch and ironically how busy they were. Yeah right! I don’t care that it’s your sons birthday, I don’t care that you went to Thorp Park for the day and I don’t care that you bought a new pair of jeans. I am actually busy and I don’t see how this enriches my life in any shape or form (apart from make me want to be at Thorp Park!). However, just over a year ago I was being hit left right and centre with articles about the power of Twitter with everyone telling me that I’ve got try it; “everyone else is doing it”. (more…)

Eightyone Design personal photography 2009

Well 2009 has come and gone, so it’s time for a little bit of reflection. This time last year we posted about our New Years resolutions, some of which we adopted and some fell by the wayside before we’d even hit February! We managed to stop naming files ‘this-one’ or ‘final-this-one’, although our desktop’s are still as full as ever. We did, however, launch our new website back in March, so overall we are pretty proud. One New Years resolution we would like to expand upon was our pledge to create more personal projects. I have thoroughly enjoyed indulging in photography this year with my DSLR, but that’s as far as the personal projects went, so in 2010 we will try our best to develop more personal projects. (more…)

Why does everyone think they are a social media expert?

Why does everyone think they are a social media expert?

As I scroll through my twitter feed on any given day, I can guarantee you there will be at least a dozen people promoting their Social Media workshops. These are all aimed at helping people grow their businesses through online networking tools. Any workshop which states they can ‘grow your business’ denotes to me that they must know what they are talking about and are therefore an “expert”. (more…)

Essential WordPress Resouces

As we keep mentioning, we recently redesigned the Eightyone Design website. Over the long and painful 7 months it took us to get the new site up and running, we uncovered a lot of things we didn’t know about WordPress. Ranging from plugins to hacks, we found there were a great deal of ways you can customise WordPress to suit your needs. So I thought I would share with you some of the WordPress resources I found and used for the redesign of our website:

20 Cool RSS and Twitter Icons

Following the recent re-design of the Eightyone Design website we are now questioning the inclusion of some extras in the site design. First off is the RSS icon. Do wee need to have the RSS icon displayed on our website in order for users to instantly recognise they can subscribe to updates from us? Secondly is the Twitter icon and accompanying feed. Should we include our latest tweets on our blog? Similarly, should we also include a twitter style icon to allow people instant recognition that we are actively using Twitter? (more…)

Eightyone Design article in Images Magazine

We were recently featured in Images Magazine showcasing the Summer 08 collection of World Beach Rugby Clothing. The magazine discovered our blog through Google and read our post about how we created the WBR Summer clothing range. Soon enough the magazine got in contact and asked to feature the article. We were more than happy to be included in the publication and thrilled they found us through Google. (more…)

Design and Development of The VW Camper Van Blog Website and Logo Design

Monday, December 1st, 2008

As you are probably well aware over here at eightyone design we have a huge passion for VW campervans. We have written a couple of articles on them (When should a graphic designer stop designing? and VW campervan logo designs) and love to tinker with our own VW T25 Camper Van. We had been thinking of creating a blog solely dedicated to our hobby enabling us to write endless articles about various events we attend, camping, plans for our van as well as featuring other peoples vehicles. We finally launched www.vwcampervanblog.com last month and we are really pleased with the overall look as well as how it has been received by the VW Community. In this article we outline the design process we went through to design the blog and where we drew inspiration from.

Overall Style

We decided upon a vintage / retro theme as the blog would feature all different vans from 1950’s and 1960’s splitties through 1970’s Bay Window Vans and also the more modern VW camper vans.

Logo Design

We started at the beginning – with the logo design. Knowing we were after a retro feel we hit the usual inspiration hot spots such as Flickr. We found some great examples of vintage and retro drinks signs aswell as petrol / oil signs which we really liiked and seemed to suit the subject matter really well. (more…)
